FFV Four Job Fiesta

Tomorrow marks the start of the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta for 2015, and I’ll be taking part for the first time.

Every year, gamers pledge to play Final Fantasy V while being assigned jobs randomly (as a minimum — extra challenges are available), and then donate to Child’s Play, a charity devoted to gifting toys and videogames to children’s wards and specialist hospitals:

With those cash donations, we purchase new consoles, peripherals, games, and more for hospitals and therapy facilities. These donations allow for children to enjoy age-appropriate entertainment, interact with their peers, friends, and family, and can provide vital distraction from an otherwise generally unpleasant experience.

Here’s my registration and pledge:

This will be my first ever play through of Final Fantasy V, so I’ve elected to take the easiest setting: one randomly assigned job from each crystal, which should result in a somewhat balanced party — at the very least no duplicate jobs.

I’m secretly hoping I get given a couple of jobs that I’d never normally choose, just so there’s just a bit of panic and lateral thinking thrown into the mix.

This reminds me, actually, of the save I have on the Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy III, with my party ready to defeat the last dungeon. I used a bard all the way through the game only to discover he couldn’t quite keep the party alive against the Cloud of Darkness. I should go back to that and make sure I have the Apollo and Lamia harps…

Damn, you Butt of Darkness!
Damn, you Cloud of Darkness! I’ll be back for you! (Screenshot via finalfantasy.istad.org but very much representative of my own experience).

I digress. The rules of the FF5FJF are unconcerned with which version and how you play the game, so I’m using a ROM of Final Fantasy V Advance with an emulator on my mobile phone, and VisualBoyAdvance on my PC, both of which will make it easy to grab screenshots as I go along. I’m going to use save states for convenience — like when I’m playing on my commute — but not for save scumming.

Ashfang of Ash’s Adventures has written a series of posts covering the FF5FJF and how to make the most of each of the jobs, and so I’ll be making much use of these:

Wish me luck!  I’ll keep blogging about it, and if you’d like to try yourself, or donate based on how well I do, you can make a pledge or donate on the Four Job Fiesta website.

Best of luck! I love playing and reading about FF5 and the many variant/challenge runs, especially the Fiesta!

Good luck! I’m thinking of participating myself, though I won’t be able to pledge much because of other costs. I’ve never played any FF games before (except for my excusions in XIV), so it should be fun!
