November also contains the Procedural Generation Jam — a game jam that encourages you to “make something that makes something”. Plus, RPG Maker MV just launched; so I’m kind of in a perfect storm of factors pushing me to make something. My goal is to learn my way around RPGMMV, post screenshots along the way, and hopefully have something finished at the end of the month.
For my screenshot today, I’m showing off a map I’ve already been working on; the entrance to an ice-themed dungeon:
The players must extinguish the four flaming braziers to quench the magical flames on the cave entrance. Enemies in the area drop Essence of Water, which can be used on the braziers. As more and more of the braziers are extinguished, it begins to snow harder and harder, until finally the entrance is clear of flame.
All of the event scripting for this map is complete, so my next step is to come up with the numerical balancing of the statistics and skills so I can start work on the combat side of things. Currently that means lots of noodling about in a spreadsheet, but that isn’t quite so visually pleasing.
I’m really hoping that getting to post an image (or two) every day this month along with an accompanying little post spurs me into actually finishing this project. It’d be nice to have a little, finished, self-contained RPG to show off at the end of November. We shall see!
